Public consumption is generally prohibited
Nearly every legal-market state prohibits cannabis consumption in public places, with penalties ranging from civil fines to more serious sanctions. This holds regardless of how discreet a vape is.
Smoke-free-air laws in many states have been extended to cover vaping, which means indoor public spaces are typically covered even where the underlying law predates cannabis legalisation.
Consumption lounges exist but are rare
Several states license on-site consumption venues. They are the only places where consumption outside a private residence is clearly permitted, and they remain uncommon.
Where they exist they operate under their own licence conditions, which usually restrict what may be consumed on the premises.
Rented housing is not automatically private
Landlords may prohibit smoking and vaping by lease term, and federally subsidised housing operates under federal rules where cannabis remains controlled regardless of state law.
So the legal position and the tenancy position can differ, and the tenancy one is what gets enforced day to day.
Vehicles
Consumption in a vehicle is prohibited in essentially every legal market, for driver and passengers alike, and open-container-style provisions frequently apply to cannabis products as well.
Impaired driving law is separate and applies everywhere. Several states operate per-se THC thresholds and some have zero-tolerance provisions.
Workplaces
Employer policy is largely independent of state legality. Testing policies vary widely and cannabis metabolites persist far longer than impairment does, which is a known and unresolved mismatch.
This is worth understanding before assuming legality resolves it. It does not.
The practical position
Consume in a private residence where the occupier permits it, and check tenancy terms if renting. That covers the overwhelming majority of lawful situations.
